Teresa,
        Are you certain ALL information in the PROJ_INFO and PROJ_UNITS
files are correct for both GRASS locations?  these files should be 
located under the $LOCATION/PERMANENT  directory of both the UTM and
the AEA "GRASS Locations"...   just a shot from the hip :)
