It probably is the problem: the standard grass monitor can't run at colour
depths of more than 8bpp. Try starting your x server in 8-bit mode and see if
the problem goes away. If it does, then there is a (still 256 colour) monitor
which runs on higher bpp servers somewhere, so you could compile this and run 
your xserver at 16bpp.
