Mike,
On question 1, the Erdas file must be a version 7.3 image file; it won't 
work with older data (I don't know about newer data). If you have access 
to Erdas, this isn't a problem, as you can use the Erdas command DPDATA 
to convert the imagery to general image binary format, which can be 
loaded directly in a GRASS cell directory. The cellhd file can be created 
using information gleaned from the Erdas command LISTIT. If the Erdas 
output file is multi-band, use the GRASS command i.tape.other to load it.
