d.mon command on 24-bit display

I've never used grass before, and I've been asked by a
professor to install grass on his Sparcstation 5 running
Solaris, with a 24-bit display.
I installed the grass 4.1 solaris precompiled binaries, and I
have the following problems with the display program d.mon
on the 24 bit display:

GRASS 4.1 > d.mon start=x0
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 78 (X_CreateColormap)
Serial number of failed request: 269
Current serial number in output stream: 270
Error - Can't set up pipe to graphics device.
Problem selecting x0. Will try once more
Error - Can't set up pipe to graphics device.

To verify that this was a problem with the 24 bit display,
I logged into a machine with an 8 bit display, and rlogin'd
to the Sparcstation 5, and d.mon, and several display
commands worked.

After that worked once, when I try to run d.mon again on either
machine I get the following error message:

GRASS 4.1 > d.mon start=x0
Graphics driver [x0] is already running
Warning - no response from graphics monitor <x0>.
Check to see if the mouse is still active.
ERROR - no response from graphics monitor <x0>.
Problem selecting x0. Will try once more
Warning - no response from graphics monitor <x0>.

ERROR - no response from graphics monitor <x0>.

I have tried d.mon stop=x0, and d.mon unlock=x0 and nothing happens.
The only way I've been able to get d.mon work again is to reboot
the system.

Does anyone know what I need to do to solve either of these problems?

thanks,
