ps.map problem

We've been using ps.map at our site without problems for several years. Today a
error occurred that we've never run into before. It seems to only occur when
running ps.map from the command line. Here's the error message:
Mapset <grass> in Location <stewart>
GRASS 4.1 > ps.map input=alpha.map scale=1:12500 output=alpha.ps
PS-PAINT: PostScript painter "alta36x48" selected.
PS-PAINT: scale set to 1 : 12500.
PS-PAINT: reading vector file <alpha.box in grass> ...
PS-PAINT: reading vector file <roads83 in grass> ...
Can't open temporary Postscript mask file.
I was able to get around the problem by logging in as another user for awhile
and was able to create and print four PostScript files from that login before
the problem reappeared there. Does any one have an idea about how to correct
this problem?
Thanks!
