Print Legend

Hello,
I am trying to use GRASS p.map/p.map.new to generate an output file
in ppm format. I wish to incorporate the raster map legend information
below the output image but I am unable to do so even though I specify 
that I wish to print the legend information. I viewed the ppm out put
using xpaint but cannot get the legend on the xpaint screen. Can anyone
suggest me a way to incorporate legend into the ppm output
