Linux Grass Installation

I have been attempting to install Linux Grass 4.1.5 on an IBM system.
I am using Slackware 96 (version 3.0) and I have not had any luck from
the downloaded files or the files from the CDROM from the book Linux
Configuration and Installation (Volkerding, etc al).  The error I am
getting is associated with unexpected end of files, invalid compressed
data, and a failure to read and create files.  
  I would appreciate any help.
