you can use GRASS with 8bit as well as 24bit. You just have
to set the link in grass42/driver to the proper driver.
The message "X_CreateColormap" indicates that the link is
currently set to the wrong GRASS-Xdriver.

Available are the following Xdriver:

ls -la /grass42/driver/
   drwxrwxrwx   2 neteler  user         512 Jun 25 17:15 .
   drwxr-xr-x  13 neteler  user         512 Jun 25 17:15 ..
   -rwxrwxr-x   1 neteler  user       96364 Jun 25 17:15 CELL
   lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     other          9 Jun 15 15:21 XDRIVER -> XDRIVER_8
   -rwxr-xr-x   1 neteler  user       41880 Apr  2 10:59 XDRIVER_24
   -rwxr-xr-x   1 neteler  user       41660 Apr  2 10:59 XDRIVER_8

The link MUST certainly fit to the configuration of XSERVER of
your Linux/SUN/HP, whatever you use. Getting this error message,
you either change the color depth of your X11-XSERVER or the link
onto the GRASS driver.

Hope this helps
