graphics monitor

Hi,
this may sound rather simple to most, I hope. 
I am running grass4.1 on SunOS 4.31.
The original installation on this machine that I inerited got somehow messed
up in a recent transfer of files.
I can start x0 monitor but I get the missing lock file message.
I was told it may have something to do with the fact that I don't and can't have
/var mounted on this machine.
Is there another fix for this problem, please.
