NaN values in imported raster maps

Hi

I am working on streamlining the importation of data from GMT. There are
a number of options, all of which seem to work well. The problem that I
am finding is that I have raster files with a large number of NaN
values. These seem to convert to zeros, which is not what I want. Any
suggestions?
