Raster headers & unsupervised classification

Hello,
I have a series of floating point rasters which I imported using
r.in.ascii. They display and report their statistics (via r.stats)
properly, however I am unable to use them in an unsupervised classification.
When I run i.cluster the report file states that the mean for each raster
is -129 and the stdev is 0.
The only clue I have that something is wrong is that if I run r.support it
reports that each of these rasters is an empty raster file when i attempt
to edit the header, and if I atempt to update the stats it says "can't
write range file".
I am obviously missing something fundamental here, and I would really
appreciate some help.
TIA
