GRASS 5.0 beta/Redhat 6.0 - Can't create Location

I am trying to create my first GRASS dataset using the following parameters 
but GRASS will not create the Location:

Location: airport
Mapset: airshow
Database: /users/smieg/data

GRASS asks me if I "Would you like to create location airport (y/n)?"

I answer <y>.

I get a "(y/n)" prompt as a response.

I answer <y>.

GRASS replies "Location <airport> not created.  Hit RETURN -->"

The permissions on /users/smieg/data are 777.

Any help would be appreciated.
