v.in.shape: Problem with site files

I've been using v.in.shape without problem to import river/stream data
produced by ArcView into GRASS, but when I try to do the same with files
that contain point site locations, it doesn't seem to work.  No data is
displayed.  And v.to.sites yields warnings about skipping degenerate lines
and then "no sites."

Any suggestions welcome!  Thanks, tom at bluesky.org
