can't open d.mon window using 5beta_linux

Glen,

I had the same problem with RH 6.0 & Gnome.  I fixed it by switching my
console from bash to C before starting X.  It also seems to work by launching
GRASS from a C shell in a terminal window.

Hope that works for you too.
