[GRASSLIST:1997] Labeling contours

I'm battling to get the v.cadlabel routine to automatically label a 3D 
DXF file with its elevations. I have got the process to a stage 
where I can use v.digit to query a line and it returns the correct 
elevation but no lables there either. I'm pretty sure I'm getting the 
wrong end of the stick somewhere. Is it possible that I'm just not 
displaying the lables?

Has someone got a foolproof recipe for me?

I'm using 5.0.0pre1.
