Thanks everyone!  r.in.gdal did the trick.  That's much easier than
whatever I did last time.  I can't remember the exact procedure, but
it was complicated enough that I wrote a set of shell scripts to get
it done (they quit working though...I think due to the change in the
USGS SDTS format).
