Gordon, 

You might want to check out shade.rel.sh, which is described in the shell
script command reference manual.  I use the script to generate sun shaded
relief images of level 1 DTED data.  In its current form, I found the script
a bit sensitive to small variations in elevation.  In my case, the generated
images contains features that look like "steps" where the steps are caused
by an elevation difference of 1 unit (1 metre).
