[GRASSLIST:5223] Need help compiling gdal & mesa3d

Hello again,

I am able to run grass5 on my Unix system thanks to help
from this list, but do not have full functionality, since I am
missing gdal and mesa3d (for NVIZ).

I've downloaded both tar files, unzipped, untarred, configured
and have attempted to install them both. I cannot get either to
install.

Here are the error messages that I get when I execute 
make install for mesa3d:

Making install in SPARC
mksh: Fatal error in reader: = missing from replacement macro reference
Current working directory /home/steph/usr/local/Mesa-5.0/src/SPARC
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `install-recursive'
Current working directory /home/steph/usr/local/Mesa-5.0/src
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `install-recursive'

Here are the error messages that I get when I execute gmake for 
gdal:

(cd pymod; gmake)

gmake[1]: *** No rule to make target `../gdal.a', needed by `_gdalmodule.so'.  
Stop.

gdal:

My sys admin skills are not the greatest, but I know that I have python 
installed on my system, so I'm not sure why I getting this error.

Also, I do not have root access and am executing all compilations and
installations in my home directory.
