As you said, the error I was getting meant that the
GIF 
was not in the right format.  In case it is of use to 
anyone, here is the command that I used to convert a
PNG file to GIF87 format:

pngtopnm ricepic1.png | ppmquant -fs 256 | ppmtogif >
ricepic1b.gif

Where ricepic1.png was the original file, and 
ricepic1b.gif was the new GIF87 file created.
