[GRASSLIST:4006] v.alabel equivalent for lines?

Dear GRASS-users

Is there a command analagous to v.alabel that can label all unlabelled
lines in a vector map with a value?  This can be done interactively in
v.digit, but it would be useful if there was a command-line method.
