Thank you very much.

But, I'm afraid that there are still more problems:
when I try to follow steps 2 or 3 (Catalogue soils, or land use), the program 
can't read the maps; and the following message appears:

<reading categories in project MASK and REGION>
WARNING: Illegal raster value less than 1 found
hit RETURN to continue -->

It is the same sample data set. I've checked that the values of categories in 
the maps (a.soils & a.cover) are integer (I guess this is necessary) and 
greater than 1. I've even tried to change the null values to 0's but the 
problem remains.

???
