Yes. It has had problems, at least with polygon coverages, since it was 
first released about a year and a half ago. I don't understand exactly 
why it has deteriorated with time, presumably it has drifted as other 
parts of the system ahve been updated. I suppose it would be easy to 
track down this fault, but I think there would then be too many other 
issues. The decision was taken to develop it anew from scratch rather 
than try to maintain the current version, so v.in.shape and v.in.mif 
(others?) could share a lot of code as they are very similar in basic 
structure.

This is intended to go into the stable as well as 
experimental/developmental relaese of GRASS, and the preview is expected 
to be available with the next snapshot release in a few weeks time.
