Thanks for the info John, Frank.

Seems I had a dual installation of grass5 on my system and this was causing
some problems. I cleaned out and re-installed Grass5 using the default
settings. I also placed libgdal.1.1.dylib in /usr/local/grass5/lib. Now
I'm able to import georeferenced USGS DRGs ok. And using v.in.dlg and
v.support I'm also able to import hypsography DLGs (after running 'fold' on
some of the DLG files, that is). But I'm still having problems importing
USGS ASCII DEMs:

GRASS 5.0.0pre4 > r.in.gdal -o input=kaneohe.dem output=kaneohe.dem
ERROR 4: `kaneohe.dem' not recognised as a supported file format.

I thought mabe the version of r.in.gdal I'm running is unable to handle
USGS ASCII DEMs even though, as per the module instructions, it says it is
a supported file format (at least I think it says so -
http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/formats_list.html). So I thought I'd try
the r.in.dem module, but this module is missing from my grass5 installation
and seeing that there are no manual pages for it I thought it might have
been phased out in favor of r.in.gdal..

BTW - the DEMs I'm trying to import starts with the line: KANEOHE, HI
DEM GENERATED FROM ARC/INFO

Any pointers of how I should proceed with this?
Thanks.
