In Grass4 a Bourne shell script was contributed which allowed the user to
interpolate intermediate points on grass vector lines. It was called v.plant and
the man page is here:
http://www.geog.uni-hannover.de/grass/gdp/html_grass4/html/v.plant.html

This script will probably work in grass5 but I haven't tried it. Give it a go.
