Paul: Thanks for the response. Tried what you suggested 
(--with-gdal=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config)

and

checking if we should build directly against GDAL... yes
no
checking whether to use TIFF... yes

any idea if it will build directly against GDAL (since it said yes, and then 
no???!!!!)
