[GRASSLIST:1175] GDAL support for GML

I know this is a GDAL question, but I've received no response from the 
gdal developers list. 

Has anyone successfully compiled GDAL with support for Xerces (for 
parsing XML/GML input)?  If so, could you share the options you used to 
compile?  I'm using the latest version of each (gdal 1.1.9 and Xerces 
2.3.0).

What other tools are people using for parsing GML in the Grass world?
