[GRASSLIST:4277] measuring lines

Hello All

I'm new to grass so please bear with me. I am looking for a way to  
measure the length of vector lines in meters using grass 5.7 and enter  
them into the vector's db table. I know I can draw a line onto a map  
and get the line's length using Display->Measure Lengths and Areas but  
this doesn't do what I need and I don't see anything useful in the  
documentation. Any ideas?
