[GRASSLIST:5050] Starting a monitor

I've installed GRASS 5.4.0 on an "emachine" running SuSE 9.1, but
can't get a monitor started.

When opening the Display Manager, an error message appears:
..."grassdata/spearfish/PERMANENT/.d.dmrc doesn't exist"

>From the GRASS menu, Display>Start Monitors>x0 causes a window to
appear and then immediately close, and then the following message:

    using default visual which is TrueColor
    ncolors: 65536
    Graphics driver [x0] started
    ERROR eof from graphics driver.
    Problem selecting x0. Will try once more
    Socket is already in use or not accepting connections.
    Use d.mon to select a monitor

Trying to select a monitor using d.mon generates the same result.

I will appreciate a suggestion on what to do next, or where to find
the solution myself.
