Customize menu:
  O - Select An Overlay vector Map None
  B - Select A Backdrop CELL Map   None  

then,

Window menu:
  O - Display Overlay Map
  B - Display Backdrop CELL Map    



GRASS 5.7: Open settings -> Background tab -> Add command
d.rast background ..
d.vect lakes
etc
