Thanks a lot for your quick answer:

You typed: % gdalinfo mrlc_utm_cl
I typed    : % gdalinfo w001001.adf

The problem was there. Great ! I would never have thought to put the
 directory name instead of the file name (I don't think it's in the doc.)
