[GRASSLIST:3584] Multi-scale image segmentation in GRASS?

Dear list,

GRASS has been installed on my Linux box for a week and I have been
following the mailing list for two weeks to get an idea of what is going round.

Despite being a total newbie in GRASS, I would like to dive straight into
the deep end. I would like to investigate the potential for multi-scale
image segmentation of satellite imagery and aerial photography. I have no
budget for commercial software, so would like to discover the GRASS route
into this technology.

Does anybody have experience with this technology being implemented in GRASS?

Image segmentation does not seem to be available in GRASS. Are there plans
to develop such functionality?

Would the GRASS data model potentially allow for multi-scale hierarchical
image segmentation, i.e. a hierarchical nesting of polygons across 'levels'
or maps?

Looking forward to any responses,

Sander Oom.
