An .mxt file is an ESRI ArcGIS template file, it works like a M$ Word ".dot" 
file.

Usually, the .mxt file itself is _useless_ since it is used (when it works) to 
define a base layout (e.g. paper size, map frame position, legend position, 
presentation coverages and so on) for bulk map procuction in series.

Of course, the .mxt, once opened, will generate a new document, and probably 
it will serach for some shapefile or coverage or grid or imagery...
