I ran into the same problem you mentioned while trying to import geotiffs
into Grass 6.0 Cygwin. I'm not sure if a fix has been made for the r.in.gdal
problem, but the short-term workaround I used was to load my tiff into a
graphics program like the GIMP, resave the tiff thereby erasing all
georeferencing info in the header, create a worldfile, then import the tiff
into Grass 5.4 using r.in.tiff (which is not dependent on GDAL libraries).

Subject: [GRASSLIST:5714] r.in.gdal - tiff import problem

Hi list
Recently I installed Cygwin with the whole set of programs in a Windows XP
os, then I installed the precompiled grass 6.0 cvs from the web page
referred on the main grass web site. I follow all the instrucctions.

I just tried to import a Landsat ETM + band already registered by ENVI.
I got the next error:

GRASS 6.0.cvs:~/importar/1946 > r.in.gdal i=ETM1946BZ16REGB1.IMG
o=ETM1946BZ16REGB1
assertion "codecs == NULL" failed: file
"/usr/src/tiff/tiff-3.7.0beta2/libtiff/tif_compress.c", line 258
Aborted (core dumped)
There is a problem between tiff versions?
What can I do?

Best regards
camilo
