When drawing, you have to close the region, so:

1) click zoom
2) click define region
3) click draw region
4) (drawing, done with mouse-left, do NOT close the region with your mouse
pointer!)
5) -> click complete region <-
6) click done

and draw the next region again from 2)

P.S. What sort of error message dou you get?
P.P.S. Do you run grass 5.7 on sarge?
