[GRASSLIST:5308] v.out.ascii on PPC new problem

Greetings!

With the latest CVS version of GRASS 5.7 I am getting the following error 
while running v.out.ascii on a Debian/testing PPC machine:

v.out.ascii input=v1 
Illegal filename. character <”> not allowed.
GRASS_INFO_ERROR(24722,1): Cannot find vector v1@”!ÿà| ¦BŸ

it seems like some crazy characters are getting into the command line...

attached is an strace log...

Perhaps this is not a GRASS problem, but a locale one?
FWIW, i tried changing my locale to C, and it still errors...
