Thanks Hamish.
I was aware that v.in.e00 requires avce00, so I installed Denis  Giguere 
packages (I tried to compile, with no success). From the command line, 
avceimport works, but v.in.e00 does not: it complains about
v.in.e00: 'e00conv' program not found, install it first
So I guess the package is incomplete?
