fun facts timeline:

Development on proto-GRASS began in 1982 by the US Army Construction
Engineering Research Laboratory (USA-CERL) on Vax 11/780. Also in this
year the Commodore 64 was announced, as was MS-DOS 1.1.

1983 GRASS ported to SUN-1 Microcomputer.

1985 GRASS 1.0.

In 1987 GRASS 2.0 was released as well as a GRASS video narrated by
William Shatner (Captain Kirk of Star Trek).

1988 GRASS 3.0.

1991 GRASS 4.0.

1995 GRASS port to Linux.

1996 US gov't abandons GRASS to the public domain.

1999 first version of GRASS 5. Project licensed under GNU GPL.

5.0.0/stable released September 2002.

Development on 6.0 started in CVS 6 January 2002 (3 years, 2 months ago).

10 Mar 2005: GRASS GIS 6.0.0 released.
