It is new and only in the development version of GRASS (6.1-cvs).

You might be able to download the script from the CVS-web interface and
try running it, maybe it works with 6.0.1, maybe it doesn't. I've got a
feeling it doesn't.

Also you can try QGIS to load GRASS vectors & make nice vector legends.
