I posted the latest version of the swath mapping script to the Wiki:

v.swathwidth

It's usable now and not too resource intensive. I will work on
Hamish's suggestion to try v.mkgrd if I have time. It looks like that
might be a good way to get what I want, but, I think I would need
Python which adds a dependency to the script.
