[GRASS-user] New user, GRASS crashes on "Create New Location"

Greetings,

If there's a more basic list I would be better off on, please direct me.

I've installed GRASS on an Ubuntu AMD64 box using Synaptic Package 
Manager (tried doing it the hard way, and ran into a conflict between 
dependencies).  I can run the program apparently fine; I created my 
GRASSDATA folder and downloaded the sample data to it, but when I click 
"Create New Location" the program crashes with no visible errors.  It 
just disappears.  The funny thing is, I think I had the same problem 
when trying to run it under Cygwin in Windows, with my old computer.

Any ideas?
