[GRASSLIST:10497] Grass closing when opening new mapset

Hello,

I am brand new to Grass (6.01) and to Linux (Ubuntu 5.1) and trying to
follow the Grass 6 in a Nutshell SpearFish tutorial.

When I create a new mapset in the opening dialog and choose "enter GRASS" a
splash screen briefly opens (GIS Manager) then closes. I am then left with
no evidence of GRASS visible.

Can anyone suggest what is happening here.
