[GRASSLIST:9733] count cats raster

hi all!

i have a raster map with certain categorie values, which i wanna count. the
problem is that the ids don't increment continuously:

60670
60784
60962
61141
61258
61288
61297
61307
61357

r.cats, r.stats, r.describe cannot help to count cats and r.info gives the wrong
information (Number of Categories: 61357)

what i did is to pipe the output of r.cats into a file and looked how many lines
there were - but: isn't there another solution of this in GRASS?
