I can confirm the sudo tip on my Ubuntu Dapper box, using yesterday's CVS.

Subject: [GRASS-user] Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper: strange sudo hints printed
atstartup
Hi,
When I start Grass 6.1, 5.5 or 6.01 on Ubuntu Dapper I receive strange
hints about using sudo for some purpose. No matter if I start Grass with
-gui or -text. I don't understand why I would need sudo for anything
with Grass.
Example:
Welcome to GRASS 6.1.cvs (2006)
GRASS homepage: http://grass.itc.it/
This version running thru: Bash Shell (/bin/bash)
Help is available with the command: g.manual -i
See the licence terms with: g.version -c
Start the graphical user interface with: gis.m &
When ready to quit enter: exit
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo
<command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

those look strange!
