Hi Stefán,
i have tried to reproduce this behaviour.
It appears if the 2d region setting has a lower resolution then the 3d region setting.
In r3.to.rast, the 3d region will automatically changed to the current 2d resolution, if they are different.
The squares are huge if the regions are slightly different:
In spearfish60 "res=102 res3=100", produces big squares,
res=120 res3=100 ... smaller squares.
I guess this is related to the neares nighbour method within
the g3d lib?
You can avoid this while using data with equal resolution and region settings.
