[GRASSLIST:1037] Contours from Rasters

Hi All,
I have recently received a floating point raster DEM and would like to
generate contours from the data.  I was wondering if anyone knew of a good
online recourse describing the rules pertaining to generating DEM, contours
etc.. from data, i.e. if my cell resolution is 10m derived from 1:10,000
scale map what should the resulting contours interval be set at?  Or
inversely if I have 1m contours what cell size should I use to when creating
a DEM?
