FWIW, GRASS 5.4 should still compile using the latest OS distros.
(you could offer both to the holdouts)

ver 5 sites files are known to be more efficient when dealing with
zillions of points, but at the same time I'm not sure if LFS support
exists for GRASS 5.4 sites files.
