In fact the wxPython (instead of C++ wxWidgets) GUI for GRASS CAN be used
with the current code. It is being developed on top of the current code and
I use it all the time in fact. It already has most of the functionality of
the TclTk interface, and exceeds it in some places. (e.g., scale and legend
overlays or location wizard). You can get it from the GRASS Addons SVN
server and try it out.

It requires Python 2.4, higher and wxPython 2.8 or higher, along with numPy
for the profiling module. These are available in binary for most platforms
and as source code for the rest.
