Argh! I put the wrong line in my previous email; it should have been: 

r.mapcalc BOF_ALLBATHY_Nov22_2007_10m_Float = 'float(BOF_ALLBATHY_Nov22_2007_10m)'

which worked....sorry for the noise. My previous question about DCELL math still stands, though.
