Updating on the svn, I get this configure error
checking for gdal-config... /usr/bin/gdal-config
configure: error: *** Unable to locate GDAL library

Running ldconfig seems that my gdal libarary's are in the right place:
maning at thermaltake:~/source/develbranch_6$ sudo /sbin/ldconfig -p | grep gdal
libgdal1.5.0.so.1 (libc6) => /usr/lib/libgdal1.5.0.so.1
libgdal1.5.0.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libgdal1.5.0.so
libgdal1.4.0.so.1 (libc6) => /usr/lib/libgdal1.4.0.so.1

cheers,
maning
