A series of environment variables need to be set for GRASS modules to
work. "Starting" GRASS means mostly that, i.e. setting these variables.
As Glynn mentioned, you can set them by hand. See
http://grass.osgeo.org/wiki/GRASS_and_Shell for some instructions.
